The Urgency of Now: ¡No Pasarán! — raised fist and flame emblem
“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there ‘is’ such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”
Martin Luther King Jr.April 4, 1967, Riverside Church, New York

Dr. King's historic warning against the paralysis of complacency resonates as much today as it did almost 60 years ago. Engendered by his impulse, our multi-disciplinary call to conscience draws strength from history's people-powered social activism. We evoke the ¡no pasarán! battle cry — "they shall not pass" — to bridge the gap between historic anti-fascist movements and contemporary struggle, demonstrating that the fight to protect democratic values is ongoing and multi-generational. In an era marked by erosion of civic rights and the rise of authoritarian rhetoric, we serve up a vital reminder that freedom is not self-sustaining. It is not free: we must stand up and demand it. Systemic oppression around the globe threatens our fundamental right to free expression and self-determination. In the face of quiet tyrannies: silence is not just concession, it's complicity.

We bring together a diverse collective of contemporary artists who refuse to remain silent, using creative practice as a vital weapon of resistance and tool for civic awakening. The works gathered here represent an unusually broad range of fine art media including VR, documentary film, video art, and interactive performance. Throughout the event, visitors will engage hands-on in political processes and playful immersion. We are gathering artworks that do not merely document symptoms of fascism; they dissect its mechanics and disrupt its power. Art has long been a prime target of dictators due to its unique ability to expose corruption, preserve historical truth, and foster independent thought. By transforming the gallery into a sanctuary for free minds, we reclaim the public square.

We stand at a critical precipice where the future of our democracy depends entirely on our immediate action. Fierce Urgency: ¡no pasarán! rejects the luxury of waiting for a more convenient time to act. Ultimately, this is not a passive viewing experience; it is a catalyst for civic mobilization. Democracy is not a static monument, but a continuous, living practice that requires active participation and defense. By witnessing these bold acts of visual dissent, visitors are invited to shed complacency and embrace their own agency.
